Discovery Bible Study
-
Pray and ask God to help you know who to invite
God will lead you to invite people you know to study the bible with you. Pray and ask for his guidance.
-
Invite
Invite the person or people God put on your heart when you prayed. Invite them by asking a simple question. Ex: “Do you want to read the bible with me? I’m reading to try to learn about God, and I thought we could read together.”
-
Choose a book of the Bible or the Creation to Christ Study
Choose short sections of scripture to read together. We recommend not much more than 10 verses at a time. Use the 4 questions we wrote to help you guide everyone in the reading.
-
Rotate "leaders"
One of the great things about this study method is anyone can facilitate or lead. Just choose the passage, read, ask the questions and discuss.
-
Remember this study is about Discovery
Everyone involved is on their own faith journey at God’s pace. So there is no need to teach in this group. The study lends itself to every person participating and discovering together.
-
Foundations of Discovery Bible Studies
God is more able to speak to people than people are able to hear God. 2. Each person is running their own race so there is no need to judge nor rush anyone on progress. 3. Keep to the text. The passage chosen is the determining factor in answering the questions and the discussion.
Discovery, Obedience, Activate Faith
-
Discovery Bible Studies are meant to help us discover God and his active plans for us. We learn together about who God is, who people are, and what we can do with the bible. The aim is for each person to discover in the group rather than one person teaching the group what they discovered. These studies are personal and communal. Nobody is more important than the next. All are relying on God to speak and lead the group.
-
Knowing a lot about God is not the goal of Discovery Bible Studies. The discovery is meant to lead each person to obey. If we agree the bible is worth reading, then we want to help each other agree the bible is worth obeying. Christians believe the God of the Bible is alive and can be known. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

A life of faith is meant to be active and alive. Since we follow a living God we have a living faith. We think Discovery Bible Studies help all of us take active steps of faith towards loving God and people more. So we think of these studies as activating faith in each person. James said, But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. -James 2:18
